EALD

One of Prospect North’s strengths is the diversity of our school community. We have cultural groups within our local community from all over the world. We promote and celebrate our cultural diversity by spreading understanding, tolerance and respect. We promote cultural knowledge and sense of connectedness and identity for all of our students. Our Cultural studies programs engage all students in events and rich conversations with other to enable them to practice their English vocabulary skills.

Literacy programs in all classes explicitly teach grammar, phonics, writing, spelling, reading and comprehension in ways that ensure any gaps in EALD students understanding of English are addressed. In addition, we monitor the literacy performance and achievements of EALD students annually in addition to our usual assessment procedures.

During term 2 teachers work closely with a colleague to map student progress using a resource called the Language and Literacy Levels. These Language and Literacy Levels are used to:

  • Assess, monitor and report the language and literacy development of a student.
  • Determine the level of student language learning need
  • Inform programming & planning through the identification of key teaching points
  • set learning goals and language level targets.
